There's nothing quite like walking out of the salon with a perfect blow-dry, so it's a real frustration when it's gone by the next morning. The good news is that a long-lasting blow-dry is less about luck and more about a few small habits — most of which start well before the dryer ever comes on.
Start with genuinely clean hair
A blow-dry only lasts as long as the hair underneath it stays fresh. Product build-up and excess oil weigh hair down and collapse volume faster, so a proper wash and a thorough rinse make all the difference. If your roots tend to go flat quickly, a lightweight shampoo with conditioner kept to the mid-lengths and ends will help your style hold for longer.
The styling happens while it dries
Most of a blow-dry's staying power is built into the drying itself. Rough-dry to about 80 per cent first, then work in sections with a round brush — that's where the shape and volume actually set. A volumising mousse or a light blow-dry spray on damp hair gives the style something to grip, so it holds far better than styling dry hair ever will.
Set it with cool air
This is the step most people skip at home. Heat shapes the hair, but cool air is what locks that shape in place. Once a section looks the way you want it, hit it with the cool shot on your dryer for a few seconds before you let go. It sets the cuticle while the hair is still warm and pliable — the same trick we use in the chair to make a finish last.
Protect it overnight
Friction and moisture are the enemies of a good blow-dry. Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase reduces frizz and keeps your style smoother, and loosely pinning longer hair up — or popping it in a soft scrunchie on top of your head — stops it crushing flat while you sleep. In Melbourne's damp mornings, a quick blast of cool air and a little dry shampoo at the roots will revive day-two and even day-three hair beautifully.
Work with your cut, not against it
A blow-dry will always sit better on hair that's cut to suit how it naturally falls. If yours drops within hours no matter what you do, the shape itself may be working against you. The right cut, along with a few tailored product suggestions, can change everything — and it's something we genuinely love sorting out for clients.
