Rose Street is a Fitzroy terrace we rebuilt with Eastop Architects, and it quietly became one of our most travelled projects. est magazine put it in Issue 38 with our name on the build credit. The Local Project gave it a project feature, photography by Willem-Dirk du Toit, words by Bronwyn Marshall. Archello lists it among featured sustainable private houses, and Yellowtrace covered the renovation in 2021.
A terrace taken back to structure
Terrace renovations are surgery in a laneway. The house was taken back to structure and rebuilt with recycled brick, bespoke joinery and a stairwell that turns daylight into a feature. Every trade was sequenced so each finish protected the one before it, because on a tight Fitzroy block there is nowhere for damage to hide.

Why the credit line matters
A builder’s name in a magazine credit is small type. It is also the entire reputation of the trade, printed. The photographs show the architect’s ideas. The credit says somebody stood on site for months making those ideas survive contact with an old terrace. We are in the small type on Rose Street, and the small type is where we like to live.
