Hand Finished Timber Frames

Timber cut, joined and finished in the studio, so the frame answers to the work and the room rather than to whatever a supplier had in stock.

What it involves

Hand Finished Timber Frames

A hand finished frame starts as a length of timber, not as a product code. It is cut to the measurements of your piece, joined at the corners, and finished to the tone you actually want, which is usually somewhere a catalogue does not go. Matching an existing frame in a room, picking up a colour buried in the work, or simply landing on a warmer oak than the stock one.

The finishes shown below come from Studio9Art’s own range of profiles. They give you a sense of the depth and the corner work, though the point of finishing by hand is that none of them is a fixed endpoint.

Bring in a photo of the room, or the frame you are trying to sit alongside, and the finish can be matched against it.

How it runs

Three steps, in the studio

01

Profile and proportion

A slim gallery profile disappears and lets the work speak. A heavier one frames the work as an object. Which is right depends on the piece and the wall.

02

Finish to match

Timber finished by hand to the tone you want, matched against a sample, a photo of the room, or an existing frame.

03

Cut, joined, fitted

Corners cut and joined in the studio, then the mat, glazing and work fitted into the finished moulding.

Finishes

A few of the profiles

Studio9Art’s own mouldings. Because the finishing is done by hand, none of these is a fixed endpoint.

Questions

Hand Finished Timber Frames, answered

Can you match a frame I already own?

Usually, yes. Bring the frame in if it is small enough to carry, or a clear photo with something in shot for scale. Matching against the real thing is far more reliable than matching against a description.

What timbers do you work with?

The studio works across light and dark timbers as well as painted and toned finishes. Because the finishing is done here rather than bought in, the useful question is what you want it to look like, not which product name to pick.

Are hand finished frames only for expensive work?

No. A hand finished frame is chosen when the frame has to do something specific, whether that is matching a room, suiting an unusual size, or holding a piece that matters to you regardless of what it cost.
