Picture Framing

Every piece is measured, matted and framed to suit the work itself, never trimmed to fit a size that happened to be on the shelf.

What it involves

Picture Framing

Most of what comes through the studio is a single piece someone cares about. A print carried home from a trip, a photograph of a grandparent, a first real painting by a child, an original bought from a gallery. The job is the same in every case. Measure the work, choose a moulding and a mat that let it sit properly, and cut everything to the piece.

Nothing is cropped and nothing is forced. Works on paper are hinged so they can come out again without damage, and the mat window is cut with a bevel so the edge of the opening catches the light instead of dropping a hard shadow across the work.

You are welcome to bring the piece in and hold mouldings against it. Most people settle on the frame within a few minutes once the work is sitting in front of the samples.

How it runs

Three steps, in the studio

01

Bring the piece in

We measure the work and talk through what it needs, with the piece itself in front of us rather than a description of it.

02

Choose by eye

Mouldings and mat board held against the actual work, so the frame is chosen against the colours and the paper, not from a catalogue.

03

Framed by hand

Cut, joined, mounted and fitted in the studio, then ready for collection or delivery across Melbourne.

Questions

Picture Framing, answered

How long does framing take?

It depends on the moulding and the glazing chosen, and on whether anything needs to be ordered in. If a piece is wanted for a particular date, say so when you bring the work in and it can be planned around.

Can you frame something oversized or an odd shape?

Yes. Mouldings are cut and joined here rather than bought in fixed sizes, so a large canvas or an awkward proportion is a question of measuring properly, not of finding a frame that happens to fit.

Do I need to know what I want before I come in?

No. Most people arrive with the work and no idea what suits it. Seeing real mouldings and mat board against the piece usually answers it faster than any amount of looking online.
