Landscaping & Building in Ivanhoe

Ivanhoe is one of Melbourne's most established garden suburbs — leafy streets, generous blocks and a deep stock of Edwardian and Californian bungalow homes set behind mature plantings. Gardens here have history, and most jobs are as much about respecting what's already there as adding something new. Eden Building & Landscaping works across Ivanhoe and the wider Banyule area, just a short trip from our Greensborough base, bringing one coordinated team to design, building, planting, maintenance and tree work.

Whether you're restoring a tired heritage front garden, building a new entertaining area out the back, or simply getting an overgrown block back under control, our approach is the same: done properly, done respectfully, done on time.

Working with Ivanhoe's period gardens

The character of Ivanhoe gardens is unmistakable — established hedges, deciduous trees that turn through autumn, tessellated tile paths to the front door, and the kind of structure that takes decades to mature. A lot of our work here is restoration rather than reinvention: repairing or rebuilding period-appropriate paths and edging, reworking planting beds that have grown leggy, and bringing back the symmetry these homes were designed around. Where a garden does need a fresh layout, we plan it so the new work sits comfortably with the home's era rather than fighting it. Our design and planning team can map the whole thing out before a single plant goes in.

Ivanhoe also has its quirks underfoot. Blocks toward the Yarra and around Darebin Creek can fall away steeply, which brings retaining walls, drainage and terracing into the conversation — get the levels and the soak-aways right and a sloping garden becomes its best feature; get them wrong and you'll be chasing erosion and damp every winter. The heavier clay soils common through this part of Melbourne also shift with our wet-winter, dry-summer swings, so we build foundations and drainage to suit, and lean on hardy, often native and drought-tolerant planting that holds up once the warm months arrive.

Heritage overlays and Banyule Council

Plenty of Ivanhoe falls within heritage overlay areas, and several streetscapes are valued precisely for their established trees and front-garden character. That can affect what you're allowed to do — front fencing, hard paving, the removal of significant or canopy trees, and works near a tree's protected root zone may all need a planning permit or be subject to local laws through Banyule City Council. It's always worth checking before work starts; we're happy to talk through what's likely to apply to your property and, where needed, help coordinate the right approvals so nothing stalls midway. Removing or pruning a mature tree is one to be especially careful with — our tree lopping crew works to council requirements rather than around them.

The projects we're asked for most in Ivanhoe tend to cluster around a few themes:

  • Heritage front-garden restoration — period paths, edging, low hedging and planting that suits Edwardian and bungalow frontages.
  • Rear entertaining areas — paving, decking, pergolas and outdoor structures through our outdoor building team, designed to feel original to the home.
  • Retaining and levelling on the sloped blocks closer to the river and creek corridors.
  • Full garden transformations and replanting via our landscaping service, with sustainable, low-water plant choices.
  • Ongoing care of established gardens through regular garden maintenance, so years of mature planting don't slip back into overgrowth.

Why Ivanhoe chooses Eden

Because we're based in Greensborough, Ivanhoe is genuinely local for us — roughly fifteen minutes up the road, in our own corner of Melbourne's north-east. That closeness matters on heritage and restoration work, where the same team needs to keep showing up, understand how the garden behaves across the seasons, and respond quickly if something needs attention. With Eden you get one coordinated crew across design, building, planting, maintenance and tree work, rather than juggling separate trades — and, when it's needed, round-the-clock emergency response.

Ivanhoe questions

Common questions.

Do I need a permit to landscape my Ivanhoe garden?+

It depends on your property. Many parts of Ivanhoe sit within heritage overlays, and works like front fencing, significant paving, or removing established trees can need a planning permit or be subject to local laws through Banyule City Council. We always recommend checking before work begins, and we can help you work out what's likely to apply and coordinate any approvals needed.

Can you restore a period garden without changing its character?+

Yes — that's a big part of what we do in Ivanhoe. We repair and rebuild period-appropriate paths, edging and planting, and where a fresh layout is needed we design it to sit comfortably with Edwardian and Californian bungalow homes rather than against them. The aim is to bring the garden back to its best, not to make it look brand new.

My Ivanhoe block slopes — can you still build an entertaining area?+

Absolutely. Blocks toward the Yarra and Darebin Creek often fall away, so we plan for retaining walls, terracing and proper drainage as part of the design. Done well, a slope becomes a feature — split levels, terraced beds and a level paved or decked area for entertaining, all built to handle Melbourne's wet winters.
